How to start getting out of retail without having everything figured out

You do not need a five-year plan. You need a direction worth testing and one action you can repeat this week.

Make the first goal smaller

Leaving retail is an outcome, not this week's task. This week's task might be identifying three strengths, saving five relevant adverts or spending one hour trying a skill you are curious about.

Small actions are not a lack of ambition. They are how you make progress around shifts, overtime and the rest of your life.

Protect one repeatable slot

Choose a realistic block of time each week and decide what it is for before the week begins. A dependable hour is more useful than a heroic weekend you never have the energy to repeat.

Keep evidence of movement

Save the role research, CV improvements, course exercises and portfolio work you complete. On a difficult week, that record shows that you are no longer standing still.
